WEAM Technology: Automated Placement of Wires, Strands, Cables, and Optic Fibers
The Functionalization Technologies Department at Fraunhofer IWU develops manufacturing processes for integrating additional functionalities directly into components. Its focus is on the automated placement of cables, wires, optical fibers, sensors, and electronic or fluidic elements. By combining additive manufacturing, automation technologies, and advanced material processing, the department enables multifunctional products with reduced assembly effort and enhanced performance. Applications range from mobility and mechanical engineering to energy systems, medical technology, and sustainable lightweight structures. The goal is the cost-effective production of intelligent, resource-efficient, and functionally integrated products for future industrial applications.
