Single Pair Ethernet: A unified standard lays the foundation for factory automation
(09/26) A standardized pin connector pattern for Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) lays the foundation for consistent Ethernet communication all the way down to the field level. Standardization based on IEC 63171-7 increases planning certainty for device manufacturers and users and supports cross-manufacturer interoperability of SPE applications.
Leading industrial companies and user organizations are working together to advance the development of the standard. The pin connector pattern is intended for IP20, M8, M12, and M12 Hybrid designs. This will make it easier to plan and implement devices and networks in the future. Users benefit from high data transmission rates, long transmission ranges, and the simultaneous transmission of data and power with up to 52 W effective output.
Phoenix Contact is actively involved in the further development of SPE technology and in the standardization of the new pin connector pattern. The relevant standard is currently being developed and is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026. The first IP20 and M12 connectors featuring the new pin connector pattern are expected in early 2027.
