Product News: Bosch's SMI340 MEMS sensor combines vehicle safety and ADAS

Modern vehicles require precise motion data for both advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and active and passive safety functions. Until now, different inertial sensors have been used to meet these requirements. With the new SMI340, Bosch brings together the capabilities of its SMI240 and SMI270 sensors on a single platform. The 6DoF MEMS sensor measures acceleration and rotation rate along all three spatial axes, providing precise vehicle-motion data for a broad range of ADAS and safety applications up to ASIL D: from advanced driver assistance functions and Electronic Stability Control (ESP) to rollover detection.

Compact and robust
The SMI340 comes in a small package, measuring just 3.1 x 4.4 mm2. Improved ARW (Angle Random Walk) and VRW (Velocity Random Walk values) compared with the SMI240 enable low-noise, highly precise measurement of rotational motion and acceleration. For L2+ ADAS applications, the sensor offers improved temperature stability from –40 to +125 °C, as well as increased vibration robustness compared with the SMI240. This ensures reliable motion data even under demanding operating conditions.

Efficient data processing
An integrated FIFO (First In, First Out) buffer temporarily stores measurement data at 16-bit resolution until it is retrieved by the control unit. Interrupt functions notify the control unit as soon as new data is available. Together, these features enable flexible and efficient sensor data transfer and support data processing in complex ADAS systems.

With the SMI340, Bosch builds on more than 30 years of experience in automotive MEMS technology and inertial sensing, bringing this expertise together in a single sensor platform. This allows vehicle manufacturers to address different application requirements with a standardized solution designed to meet the needs of future vehicle architectures.
